Notes on Region 5 AGM - Oct 4th 2018

NAPD Region 5 AGM took place in Hotel Kilkenny on Oct 4th 2018.

Our next meeting will be held at Conference 2018 in Galway!

There were approximately 30 Principals and Deputy Principals in attendance.

Notes:

Domhnall Fleming gave a very thought provoking speech on 'Student Voice'

The main points covered and topics discussed included:

  • Understandings and definitions around student voice:
  • The scripts - policy and curriculum
  • Challenges and Opportunities
  • A student voice within the classroom
  • An insight into the potential of student voice in engagement, participation and learning
  • Student Voice: its multi faceted - more than just THE student voice
  • What is heard? What actions result from this? Michael Fielding, 2001
  • Its about their engagement and the extent of their experiences. Not just have a student council for the sake of it.
  • Student Leadership? A cop out in terms of student voice. These roles don't necessarily give students a voice.
  • Cacophony of competing voices. - doing of it and managing of it
  • Teachers consulting with students in the classroom. Feedback from students given to teacher but sought from the teacher. Open dialogue between both.
  • Pedagogical approaches to take control of their own learning.
  • Enabling learners. UNCRC
  • Space, voice, audience, response and action. - LUNDY, 2007
  • New Junior Cycle - formative assessment. - students providing feedback to their teacher.
Our AGM took place after this presentation.
Minutes from last years AGM were read. No matters arising.
Discussion took place about guest speakers and initiatives such as 'teachmeet'.
Executive report given by ROC to the group.
